If you are thinking about going to Kyoto make sure to pick up a 500 yen one day city bus pass. The temples and shrines are quite spread out and it doesn't take long to get from one destination to another by bus.

Kyoto is a foreigner friendly place and the city has some great publications in English. Get all the info you need from the Kyoto Visitor's Guide.

If you can, avoid going in the summer. Kyoto is in a valley and it often has the hottest temperatures in Honshu. Best times of the year to visit is in spring and autumn.
