Living in Japan : Welcome to all those who are new in Japan and those who are thinking about coming!

Satisfy the immediate munchies

If you are on a budget and fast food appeals there are many franchise restaurants such as Mac Donaldfs, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Wendyfs, Starbucks etc.

Also there are other Japanese franchise fast food and family restaurants namely Mr. Donut, Moss Burger, Kappa Sushi, Bamiyan, Royal Host, Gusto, Friendly etc. They are usually well patronized, clean and the service is good, with friendly staff. You can get by with sign language and basic English or Japanese and if that fails you can always point at the photos on the menu. The only major drawback at these places is the poor separation of smokers and non smokers. There maybe a small sign on the table that says eno smokingf but if that table is only a metre or so away from the smoking section you canft expect to enjoy a smoke-free meal. Also during the busy times of the day you may have to wait a little but look on the bright side, tipping is not expected in Japan.

If you enter the smaller rows of streets near the stations you will also find many food stalls. Japanese favourites such as yakitori, udon, soba, okonomiyaki, oden, can be enjoyed or experienced for the first time. These places are cheap and they rely on a quick turnover of hungry customers so if you want to have a long chat with friends they arenft the best places. Also one word of advice they wonft accept payment by credit card so make sure you have some cash.
