Reentry Permits
Most foreigners go on holiday abroad at some point during their stay in Japan. Korea is less than 2 hours away both China and Russia are very close also. But before you do head out there is something you need to know.
Prior to your departure you will need to apply for a reentry permit. It involves a little paper work so it can be bothersome but the consequence for not having one is forfeiting your alien registration card at customs on the way out. This put in simple English means you will be unable to come back to Japan and will have to apply for a new visa all over again.
There are a few types of reentry permits. If you intend to go on holiday just once during the year a single reentry permit (3000 yen) is fine. Those intending to travel more often will need a multiple reentry permit (6000 yen).
The fee must be paid in revenue stamps that can be purchased within the premises or at a tabacconist nearby, directions will be given.
When going in to apply remember to take your alien registration card, and passport. The paperwork is available at the counter and the permits are usually issued on the spot. One thing to be careful of is the abiding the business hours. If you go around lunchtime you will have a long wait.
