Living in Japan : Welcome to all those who are new in Japan and those who are thinking about coming!

Sexual Equality

Heard the stories of male chauvinism? Get the facts here.

Japan is in a time of change. There are huge gaps in the way young people, their parents and, of course, their grandparents think. Legislation has been passed to bring about equality and womenfs position in society is definitely improving but new ways of thinking take time to catch on.

I would like to give the example of the world judo champion, Ryouko Tamura. She is idolized in this country. And she really deserves it, perfect at her sport, an accomplished sports presenter and a lovely person for her 28 years. Recently she married baseball star Yoshitomo Tani. The wedding was the biggest event of the year and even televised live. The pair both competed at the last Olympics and they wanted to add an einternationalf flavour to their wedding, having designed a huge wedding cake in the shape of the globe.

For me it was perfect until Ryouko, when asked by reporters, what she calls her husband now that they are married, answered she used to call him Tani Kun (a cute name) but after marriage she will call him Tani San (an honorific name). But that really sums it up, some things are changing some things will remain unchanged.
