Living in Japan : Welcome to all those who are new in Japan and those who are thinking about coming!

Opening an account

Okay so you are going to start work here so youfll need to set up a bank account.

I would suggest setting up an account before you start applying for jobs as your new employer will ask you for your account details so they can deposit your pay. Also if you are a busy person you might find it difficult to get to the bank during their short business hours. Opening an account means visiting a branch in person between the 9:00am and 15:00pm business hours.

You will need your alien card and one other form of ID for example your Japanese driverfs license or your nation health insurance card. Any forms of ID you have from your home country are not permissible here. And please note your passport is unacceptable as it does not show your present address. Also you will need a seal. I donft actually have one and I do all my business transactions with my signature, however in retrospect I wouldnft advise anyone to follow in my footsteps as it is a hassle not having a seal. Examples of this is being looked at sideways whenever you admit to not owning one, and being turned down for a credit card for the simple reason that they will not accept a signature as proof of identity.
